Mac, I guess you want to delete these? Go ahead. Or do you want me to do it? There's nothing there that I haven't here and on back up. Give it a good scrub. |

Hard disk was full, that's why we were getting errors. All should be well again now.
I'll still be upgrading this machine, but goodness knows when.

Belay that order, helm.
We've run into a bit of an internet storm in deepest Telford. I lost my 2 meg broadband connection all of Sunday. It was flaky Friday, up and down Saturday and off from midnight to midnight Sunday.
So no outages Monday morning, probably not till Thursday.
I'm finally reconciling the installation I had last year, now on my laptop, with the devil's PC machine in the UCE. I'll be able to control and monitor the PC, without having to worry about germs from rotton MicroSoft land.
I'll later delete all very, very old blogs and unused empty blogs. I guess I'll email their owners, and publish a list before. I'll store them in lost property. Don't forget you own your blog, and can download it, though I think that's bust at the moment.
I'll bring back the blog creation tool, sort out some themes, I believe Mac has one, and the front page is a nice one, any other suggestions?
I'll put it in the power of the ME's of current bloggers to create them, and, should I put a message to that effect, discretely, at the foot of every page served?
|
"Want a Villa blog?
Contact the owner@wherever.com." |
Actually, if any of you want to debate this, now's the time to speak up maybe Mac or Mark will set up a yahoo mailing list or will you blog about it?. I suppose it should be necessary to be a Villa fan to claim a free blog. I really don't know, I mean you run this place, how you set it up is up to you lot.
To get your facts rightYou're basically sitting on free bandwidth from the UCE, on Mac's old PC, and my old G3. Now the news site is elsewhere, this should be a reasonable speedy and reliable set-up. If I can trim and bash it -- which I'm working on. You'll be getting all the updates, gadgets and widgets, even though many of you'll never use them. Digital photos may interest those not other wise so bent. Or, blogging to and from phones.
The machine is not a problem, well it shouldn't be after Monday. It's the bandwidth and server space. That costs. Luckily, after the great financial crash of last year, Mac and I, well, mainly Mac swung the current set up. We know a geezer, if you know what I mean. How long that lasts, we don't know. He's just won £4.5m to set up a linux help centre in Birmingham. I'll be running OS X which is close... But relying on favours, is... Mind you, it's worked fine in the past.
I'd like to swap the old PC for a new G4, but suspect it won't happen, the swap that is, for certain I've the dosh to do buy a new machine, alas not the time to set it up. So, I think, I'll end up having to leave the PC and G3 at UCE and buy some co-location for the G4, which in this country, is pricey. The three machines will be joined up, different things doing different jobs.
Why am I doing this? To feed my kids. And it's good fun.
Anybody want to buy a blog? Or, a couple of hundred blogs?
A 1,000?
Suits you, Sir.

WAP RSS now on radio.weblogs.com. Those fine fellows at Userland have tweaked the community server to allow the upstreaming of WAP WML files. Thanks Lawrence! This is good news for WAP fans who also use Radio Userland and the Userland community server (radio.weblogs.com).
As a consequence of this change my educational technology WAP RSS feeds are now where they belong, on my weblog:
http://radio.weblogs.com/0001161/wap/index.wml
I just need a couple of tweaks of my WAP RSS tool then I'll release it to anyone who wants it. If anyone has any particular feature requests then now's the time to speak up. I'll hope to release the first public version Tuesday evening. [David Davies' Weblog]

Very late thoughts on the Everton game as the server was being the server - oh come on, you'd miss the stress if it worked all the time, wouldn't you?"
What happened? Nobody told me nuffin! Please, please tell me if it's down. Just text me on 07903 940 427 -- go on put it in your phone now! Make a template or pre written message, and next time it'll be just 2 clicks away.
Or add my email address somewhere, and send a short, "it's down" message to me. I'll be grateful, honestly!

Yip this works. Now, what about the rest?
Basically, now from Radio, I can post an item to Manila and include the title and URL. Which is something that I couldn't do before using the plain old bloggerAPI.
Three old bugs squashed today. Happy. Just what bank holidays are made for?

Erm... If you've come here from the blog radar. Go to the static Mirror of this page. I forget that Titles and Links aren't taken over from my Radio blog to the Manila blog. So, the other 'mirror' has all the links.
Something else I've got to fix.
"The Goon Squad A real negative vibe merchant..."
I didn't see any negative vibes about the server. So I can't blame your neg vibes as the cause of the extended outage. Oh well, onto the next blog.

I fully appreciate that the Server is a 'free' service and somewhat tempremental. It's just frustrating, that's all!! The people that run this web site do an EXCELLENT job."
Well I don't do a good job. All I can ask, while there is no automated way, is please tell me if it's down for too long. Email or phone. We're a community here, I guess.

Doh, you didn't offend. Not me anyway. If the server's down for such a long time, it's my fault, (and Mac's for being on holiday). And thanks for the private email. No worries.

Well, it ain't my job. It was my business. And, once it's on a new machine, it'll be my business again. THEN, I'll do an excellent job.
I really do appreciate your patience over the last year when I haven't been paying attention. Now, I'm paying attention again. I'll go over the Birmingham Poly next week, hopefully with Mac, and we'll see why what little procedures we have to stop long outages failed.

"The server is being shite, just like the villa in the 90th minute of EVERY game!
Oh I know's free! And I'm very grateful for that. This is just me being frustrated at the villa. No offence to the H&V Blog gods"
I happened to go to my own old site, couldn't and TB2'd in, saw that the server was running, but the on of switch was off, so no serving.
Was it really down for days? Mac's on holiday I thought he'd be in the country or have contacted me if there was a serious problem, and I plain don't check everyday. I guess I'd better start doing so. Manually, come here to read Aston Villa nonsense ";->" Uggg.
I wish we were back on the US servers, but that cost £25,000. Serious. I didn't make a penny. Lost loads. Now we're on a borrowed PC server, with my old Mac as a back up in the old Birmingham Ply's IT room. I don't know PC's all that well, and so the software we're using now, hasn't got all my bells and whistles for letting me know the bugger ain't working. Sorry.
I've left being a door knocker for Telewest and I'm back in the blogging and Manila industry, building Manila sites for companies and fixing their servers, just got await proposal approval.
I hope, that this service will once again be infallible. I'm investing in a nice shiny G4 with OS X in the next couple of weeks, well three.
My worry is that I may not get the free band width that this server now enjoys. I hope it will be a free swap. Otherwise, it's going to cost £3,000 for three servers over a year contract. Is there any co-location service, pref in West Midlands, but worldwide that will do us all a deal?
Anyway and in the meantime, will someone text me on +44 (0)7903 940 427 next time the site ain't working. Please.
Oh, and bear with the service, it'll get better again.
Have a look at this mock up of your news item posting environment. Well, when I can afford to buy this server, the software, the hosting, the time. You're right Mr Detroit's Nasty Villain, shit service.
